The title 'Himinglæva' was one of nine daughters of the Goddess Rán in Nordic mythology, whose names all reflected different characteristics of the ocean waves.
After a DNA test by the artist revealed him to be 9.1% Scandinavian Roper decided to connect with his ancestral roots. His home town is called Knutsford, named after the Danish Viking King Canute, and his whole family is from Yorkshire, derived from the Viking name of Jorvik, it only seems right that his work eventually started taking on the spirit of the Old Norse seafarers.
James work explores a variety of subjects from the heightened realities depicted in Baroque art and modern media to the restraint and release of energy found within complex structures such as the human body. He works in various mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture and film. He has exhibited widely throughout the world including both group and solo shows in London, New York, Los Angeles, Milan and Barcelona. Born in Knutsford, England, 1982.
