Richard started life as a small boy in the East Midlands several decades ago. A voracious
appetite for Ladybird books, Giles cartoons and jigsaw puzzles sets me kind of visual template
and before long his teachers saw he was pretty handy with a pencil. This was borne out by a
four year run of winning first prize in the annual Sunday School art event and regular victories in
the Loughborough Echo colouring competition.
This made him a natural for art school, so when the time came he decamped to Liverpool to
pursue a degree and subsequent career in graphic design which has seen him based in a
number of major conurbations in the north west, working in a wide range of studios for local,
national and international clients principally in the murky world branding and marketing.
But the pull of the pencil and paintbrush has always been strong and Richard regularly produces
more artistic work alongside his ‘real job’. In recent times, these two areas have overlapped and
combined with his love of popular music to produce his most recent work, some of which is
available here at the Egoïste Gallery.
Pick of the crop is his series of six hand-drawn and digitally enhanced re-interpretations of
David Bowie, intentionally rendered in exaggerated halftones and off-register print, further
‘weathered’ to create the feel of vintage show posters. These designs are endorsed by the late
artist’s estate and are being sold as Official David Bowie Merchandise.
